Public and historical garden
Guarda

The “José de Lemos” Garden represents one of the first public space to emerge with the expansion of the medieval city outside walls and later it evolves into the city’s first public garden.
Over time this romantic garden was being constantly altered losing meaning. Before the intervention it was tremendously degraded, full of obsolete equipment or damaged and with plants phytosanitary problems.
This project sought to value the design and original concept, while adapting the space to the current needs of public space in use. The redefinition of areas with shrubs and herbs allowed to aerating the soil, transplant and remove diseased species. The garden as a whole gained the coherence lost by successive interventions and the simple cleaning and reorganization transmit a strong extension and legibility (characteristics evidenced as essential in the quality of green spaces by environmental psychology).
